#7 – Hakon Loom

One the greatest Flames with obviously the greatest name.

Considered one of the greatest Swedish hockey players of all time, he was inducted into the International Ice Hockey Federation Hall of Fame in 1998, and the Swedish Ice Hockey Hall of Fame in 2012. Loober is a member of the elite and small club of hockey players that has won the Stanley Cup, Olympic Gold, and World Hockey Championship.

A slick playmaker as well as a killer sniper, Loob became the first Swedish-born player to score 50 goals in a single NHL season when he reached that mark in the final regular-season game against the Minnesota North Stars in 1988. He set a Flames record by recording five hat tricks during the 1987–88 season. That year he also won the prestigious Viking Award, voted on by fellow Swedish NHL players to honor the top Swede in the league.

Almost a point a game NHL player. Håkan Loob recorded 193 goals and 236 assists for 429 points in 450 regular-season NHL games over six seasons, all with the Flames.

He helped Calgary win the Stanley Cup in 1989 before returning to Sweden where he is the Head of European Scouting for the Flames.

#8 – Kent Nilsson

Kent Nilsson was a super-skilled Swede with a sweet mustache and some of the sickest hands in hockey. He hasn’t been a Flame for 30 years yet he still holds a bunch of franchise records.

Wearing jersey # 14 –  Nilsson earned the nickname “The Magic Man” because of his extraordinary skill and creativity on the ice. Fans and commentators gave him that name after seeing how effortlessly he could control the puck and make dazzling plays. Nilsson had soft hands, excellent vision, and the ability to deke past defenders in ways that seemed almost magical. Some critics joked that the Magic moniker derived from his disappearing act during the playoffs.

He often made difficult moves look easy – setting up goals with clever passes or scoring with surprising finesse. His unpredictable, highlight-reel style stood out in the NHL at the time, especially for a European player, which made him even more exciting to watch.

Check out the numbers Nilsson accumulated with the Calgary Flames, which includes his remarkable 131-point season in 1980–81 — the best in franchise history.

#9 – Joe Nieuwendyk

Joe New to his teammates and fans arrived with a bang. The big smooth-skating center with that lethal shot netting 51 goals in his first season and driving the Flames to their greatest triumph the 1989 Stanley Cup!

Nieuwendyk combined scoring touch with leadership and clutch performances. Over his eight seasons in Calgary, he piled up the goals and became a fan favorite for his consistency and big-game presence. Few players defined the Flames’ golden era more clearly than Joe Nieuwendyk. Number 25 on his jersey,  Number 1 to the Flames fans – scoring 318 goals, Joe is # 9 on our Greatest Calgary Flames of all-time.

#10 – Doug Gilmour

Dougie Gilmour didn’t spend long with the Calgary Flames, but wow did he burn bright. Acquired in 1988, he instantly became the engine, pest, and heartbeat of the team. Gilmour combined elite playmaking with an edge that drove opponents nuts and teammates harder.

In just two seasons he piled up points, wore the C, and helped push the Flames to the Stanley Cup in 1989, sealing his place in Calgary hockey lore.

He wasn’t the biggest, fastest, or flashiest, but he was relentless. Flames legends come in many forms. Gilmour was pure fire, and Calgary fans still grin, nod, and argue about this legend.
